ANVILS FALL ON THEIR LANCE

Another torrid day at the office as the Anvils stretched their continuing run of consecutive defeats to eight. Starting the game with five regular players out injured and Matt Gates having to retire after just five minutes, the odds were not exactly in the Anvils favour.

Lancing opened proceedings early with flank man Lewis Finney cutting in from the right and having his shot turned away by keeper Seb Bos, soon after a combination of Mike Williamson and Finney set up Owen Callaghan who in turn could only head wide, the visitors continued to press and on 12 mins a free kick from Jake Mills found the unmarked fullback Geo Fenton but his shot was equally wasteful.

The Anvils by this time had made little impact on the game, and with Matt Gates being injured and replaced by Sonny Barton it looked as if it could be a long afternoon, the nearest to ruffle Lancing feathers came on 25 with a long shot from Steve Major. On 35 a free kick by Mark Barnard found Sam Cane in the box who in turn couldn't quite control the ball and the chance was gone.

The visitors were beginning to get a foothold and another chance came and went with Williamson driving across the face, and a long ball out of defence that found Finney whose shot was pushed away by Bos, another chance fell to Williamson but Bos was equal to the task, with 45 on the clock the visitors finally went in front when Finney got behind the Anvil defence to cut inside and drive past the exposed Bos. HT: 0-1 Lancing.

Lancing were soon into their stride in the second half with Finney again going close, but further disasters for the Anvils were never far away and on 51 a corner from Mills led to Fenton setting up Williamson to score. 0-2 Lancing. Another goal arrived just minutes later when Finney's cross was met by Mills who smashed the ball home. 0-3 Lancing.

On 60 mins the Anvils finally started to look threatening with Barnard a latterday Archie Gemmell catching the eye with his industry thro out in trying to get the Anvils on the move, with Tom Bingham breaking thro but firing well over, just after another change came with Barnard being replaced by new signing Clive Zammit, on 64 a long cross field ball found Major in space but his shot was easily taken by custodian Darren Ford, on 70 Blair Cooney was replaced by the promising Geo Wallis who showed plenty of invention with the ball, on 70 Wallis then found Bingham whose shot was turned away by Ford, further chances came and went as the homesters fought to try and get a foothold in the game with Bingham being the main outlet, but after another miss he finally got on the score sheet on 90 when his shot rather surprised the keeper Ford who fumbled for a consolation reply. 1-3 Lancing.

But the visitors had the last laugh when well into added on time, another breakaway caught the Anvils cold allowing Callaghan to perform the last rites. FT 1-4 Lancing.
