ANVILS CAN'T STOP CASUAL APPROACH

Both sides came into this game desperate for points to move themselves away from the drop zone, for the Anvils it had to be a win / win situation with so few games now remaining and the gap growing bigger by the week.

Early exchanges were cagey, with both sides probing the other, an early Anvil chance came on 6 mins thro John Lansdale putting in a centre that flew across an empty goalmouth, followed after by Steve Sargent’s cross field ball that found Baff Addae who's shot was turned away by Casuals keeper Danny Bracken for the first corner.

After 10 the Casuals belied their name and started to up the tempo, with first a build up between Saheed Sankoh and Wilson Joseph settng up dangerman Jamie Byatt who twisted and turned in the box but could only fire over, just after another half chance went to Juevan Spencer but Anvil keeper Luke Badiali was equal to the effort.

Addae for the homesters continued to probe the Casuals rearguard with his twisting runs, and another dash on 20 saw his effort turned away by Bracken, the Anvils were having most of the play but usually ran into 'heavy traffic' in the final third against a determined defence, the Anvil defence was generally keeping the Casuals reasonably quiet, with Byatt being closely marked.

Come 34 and the Anvils were found wanting when from a cross field ball Casuals striker Joel Thompson found enough space to thread the ball home thro a mass of legs for the Casuals opener, worse was to follow just minutes later Byatt got free on the left slipped his marker and crossed for Thompson to rifle home his and the Casuals second. 0-2 Casuals.

Anvils continued to press but usually the ball was either overhit or went astray to the opposition, strikers Addae and Wade Eason were not getting much change up front, whilst fullbacks Charlie Slocombe and Akwasi Fobi - Edusei continued to probe the Casual flanks as the half ended. HT 0-2 Casuals.

Double substitution for the Anvils for the second half saw Eason and Karly Akehurst being replaced by Stephan Hamilton and Ade Akande in the hope of added punch upfront, homesters Romone McCrae had the first strike of the half but was well wide, next came Addae slipping the ball thro to Hamilton but his shot was charged down, but the homesters were not to be denied and on 52 a long throw from Lansdale found Addae loose in the box to nod home the Anvils opener. 1-2 Casuals.

On the hour however the Anvils hopes were to be shattered yet again when from a Dave Hodge corner the ball appeared to slip thro keeper Badiali's hands and into the net to put the visitors further ahead at 1-3 Casuals, on 67 it was game over for the homesters as visitors Danny Dudley had the freedom of the park to notch number four. 1-4 Casuals.

Anvils were now really struggling against the voracious Casuals attack with a last ditch tackle stopping Thompson, but they manfully pulled another goal back on 73 when a freekick by Edusei resulted in another scramble in the box with Lansdale getting the final touch. 2-4 Casuals, further Anvil flurries in the final minutes failed to add to the score as the game finished, and Anvil hopes of anything from the game disappeared into the cold night air. FT 2-4 Casuals.
