ANVILS SEE DAYLIGHT

Relief all round as the Anvils finally kick started their league programme with not only three welcome points but also their second clean sheet of the season against Selsey.

Anvils however had an early scare on 3 mins when visitors Mark Thompsons long range shot was diverted by an Anvil defender luckily into keeper Seb Bos's arms, followed just after by a Ryan Cleal long range shot just drifting wide. But the homesters soon got into their stride with Grant Rigler and Josh Alcock combining to set up James Upton to test keeper Lewis Boughton, followed by Rigler himself having a shot charged down, another combination of Upton and Alcock led to the latter firing wide, fullback Matt Gates entered the fray with his free kick from the halfway line being charged down and hastily cleared upfield. For the visitors most of their attacks were being quickly snuffed out by the Anvil backline, though visitors Cleal did get loose to fire wide and then put in a dangerous cross that evaded both friend and foe alike.

On 30 the nearest to an opening goal came with another Gates cross that had the ball pinging around the box, with Rigler getting the final touch into the keepers arms, with all this pressure something had to give and on 42 it happened with a Sam Cane corner being touched on by Scott Johnston who fed Charlie Dodd to rifle home. 1-0 Anvils, and just like bus's another turned up minutes later with the final cross of the half being diverted into his own goal by defender Carl Thompson to end a positive Anvil half. HT 2-0 Anvils.

As in the first half the Anvils had an early scare when a combination of Jack Cavel and Hadley Woodman set up Thompson (M) who could only plant his header wide of keeper Bos and the post. But normal service was soon to be resumed as the Anvils set out to boost the goal difference, starting with another mazy run by Upton before running out of space, then a Mo Shuga'a corner that had to be hacked clear, the same player then fired over after being setup by Alcock, come 70 and the Anvils third when from another corner Ciaran Steers struck the post and with the ball running loose Alcock was on hand to prod home. 3-0 Anvils.

Selsey now up against it continued to come forward with a couple of corners headed clear, and on 65 a free kick out right by Thompson (M) found Frazer Sinclair in space but no doubt surprised could only fire wide, further attempts from the visitors were usually snuffed out by a determined Anvil backline now intent on not only three points but that elusive clean sheet, on 75 Steve Major replaced the tiring Upton and on 80 Tom Saunders replaced Rigler whom with Upton had formed a worrying partnership for the opposition with their height and physique something that has been missing in the past.

The energetic Shuga'a then set his seal on the match with a final corner that caused problems for the visitors defenders and with the ball yet again pinging around the box sub Major had the final say in firing home the fourth and his own first of the season, to end a rewarding 90 mins for the homesters. FT 4-0 Anvils.

One swallow doesn't a summer make as they say, but with each match we seem to be heading in the right direction, as mentioned the front pairing of Upton and Rigler has given us that extra bite which previously had been lacking. Rigler reminds me of Ryan McBride ( but with temperament )someone who can stand the buffeting upfront and at the same time hold the ball up whilst others alongside find space.

Team: Seb Bos, Matt Gates, Mo Shuga'a, Blair Cooney, Scott Johnston, Charlie Dodd, Ciaran Steers, Sam Cane (George Wallis), Grant Rigler (Tom Saunders), James Upton (Steve Major), Josh Alcock.
