Chairmans notes from Saturdays game

We are going to publish these “from the Chair” notes online as well as in the programme from now on as we continue the revamp of the Club website to make it easier to navigate and more informative. Thanks to Richard Munn for his work on this website project. I’m not entirely sure that my regular ramblings will add much to the fount of human knowledge or wisdom but Richard has convinced me to publish (and probably be damned). In fact, the publication of my comments on the Chichester game about the referee’s performance has already drawn an immediate criticism on Twitter saying that “a bad workman always blames his tools”. I thought that was bit harsh but at the end of the day it’s all about opinions whether we agree with them or not. A final footnote to the carnage of that Tuesday night is that we have now received the administrative fall out in the form of six bookings at £10 a pop, two sendings off at £30 each and the icing on the cake a Club fine of a hefty £160. Therefore, the whole debacle has cost us/players £280! All that with not a bad tackle in sight! For a small Club with limited resources that is a very considerable blow. We moved on last Saturday to take on AFC Varndeanians in the Sussex Senior Cup at home. It was a game with a number of firsts. We have played the previous incarnation of our opponents, “Old Varndeanians”, many times mainly at third team level where we enjoyed a very friendly rivalry with them in the Mid Sussex League over a number of seasons. However, under their new moniker of AFC Varndeanians this was our first meeting with them in senior football and indeed it was their first ever game in the Sussex Senior Cup having just become eligible with their promotion to Division One. It was a strange game. I think we were still suffering a hangover from Tuesday night and we started slowly. We fell behind after 18 minutes to a well taken goal and it was impossible to begrudge the visitors that early lead. However, I always felt that we were playing within ourselves and that we would turn things around. We went in with parity restored after good work by Nick Sullivan down the right ended up with a driven cross that an unfortunate defender almost had no option but to bury past his own keeper. Goals from Dan Sullivan on 53 minutes and Michael Belli on 59 (a first of the season) largely broke the back of the resistance. A further first was to come when Oli Leslie having been fouled for a clear penalty saw his spot kick saved for a first miss after 15 successful conversions. The game was well and truly “put to bed” by two late Nick Sullivan strikes one of them a penalty. It was an odd game in that, without meaning any insult to a very sporting visiting side, there seemed an air of inevitability about the result from quite early on and as a consequence, the celebrations of a 5-1 win were strangely muted. Today we have a difficult fixture against Haywards Heath, who after the extreme disappointment of missing out on promotion last season in the committee room rather than on the pitch, will look to push even more strongly for promotion this time around. Let’s hope it’s a good game to watch. On Tuesday, we take on Little Common in the RUR Cup at the Haven in our first foray into that competition since the disappointment of losing the final last May. As always thanks for your support which is much appreciated.
