ANVILS HAMSTRUNG BY STRINGERS

This match after last Tuesdays turned out to be rather like 'After the Lord Mayors Show', for after conceding in the first half the Anvils then appeared to have wrested the game away from the Stringers within ten minutes of the second half, but then collapsed badly to concede three goals in the final half hour. Anvils had an early chance with Matt Gates putting in a cross that the onrushing Josh Allcock just failed to connect with, the Stringers suitably roused then attacked with first Pat Johnson bursting thro only to be blocked out by Charlie Dodd, within another minute a combination of Joey Pout and Johnson then led to the latter firing over, corners then followed without much trouble to the Anvil defence, the persistant Johnson then went close from another freekick, before they finally went ahead on 23 mins when from a defensive slip the elusive Drew Greenall lashed home. 1-0 Stringers.

That seemed to act as a wakeup call for the Anvils as they started to inch their way back with Grant Rigler squaring the ball in for Sam Cane to drive wide, flankman Josh Alcock then put in a long crossfield ball that found James Upton out left whose cross was pushed away by the underworked Stringers keeper Sheldon Levett, and from the corner Rigler shot over, on the half hour Michael Belli was fouled 25 yds out and from the freekick Gates drove thro the wall but straight at Levett, on 38 the injured Andrew Goodwin was replaced by Blair Cooney as the Anvils continued to dictate play and nearly had a goal on 42 when an Alcock corner after striking the bar then had to be hacked off the line, but honours were evened out with Anvil keeper Sam Jackson then having to save at point blank range a shot from Jacob Adlam to end the half. HT 1-0 Stringers.

Local Stringer supporters were left reeling as within 8 mins of the second half they then found themselves behind, first thro Cane taking advantage of a mix up in the box 1-1, then just after Upton on a charge down the left then crossed for the ball to find Rigler in space to rifle home the Anvils second. 1-2 Anvils. This sudden change of scoreline left both sets of supporters somewhat stunned at this change of events, with Anvillian supporters in dreamland and home support just dazed, but could we build on this as the homesters now went for the jugular with first Craig Normans long free kick being pushed away for a corner from which Danny Leach went near with a header, come 65 and parity was restored when keeper Jackson could only parry the ball out and Leach who made no mistake. 2-2. Anvils energy levels seemed to drop with this goal, but worse was to follow as on 70 from a corner keeper Jackson was carded for allegedly pushing a player whilst trying to grab the ball, resulting in a penalty in which Norman put to the right of the diving keeper. 3-2 Stringers.

Anvil attacks were becoming fewer as the Stringers tightened their grip on the game tho Alcock did cause Levett to fumble for the ball, changes on the Anvil bench bought on Tom Saunders and Steve Major came on for Cane who unfortunately was involved in the Stringers final goal when Johnsons shot struck Cane on the leg and looped past the stranded Jackson for the Stringers fourth. 4-2 Stringers. Final minutes passed with Dodds heading over and Cooney’s corner striking the underside of the bar and then being hacked away, followed by Belli's free kick being headed wide by Shuga'a to end a disappointing outcome after such a promising start to the second half. So yet again as the saying goes 'lts back to the drawing board'!

FT 4-2 Stringers.
