STILL NO JOY FOR ANVILS

Played against the imposing background of Box Hill, this must surely be the most picturesque of all grounds in the league, and possibly not a bad spot to view the game from, all this as both sides set out to try and play the game that would be the equal to the surrounding scenery.

The hosts set the ball rolling with a Seb Bradley freekick easily taken by debutant Anvil keeper Matt Morrish, just after a long throw found the head of Daryl Coleman who in turn set up Charlie Pitcher for a shot that was turned away for the first corner. The Anvils not to be left out had a Sam Cane charge thro the middle turned away by keeper Joe Shaw, on 6 mins after two earlier corners, striker Geoff Mahadoo took advantage of hesitant defending to rifle home the Anvils opener. 0-1 Anvils.

This somewhat rattled the homesters, but who had to wait til the 15th min before having a real chance when the outstanding Jerome Beckles broke loose only to strike the side netting, the homesters continued to up the ante with Pitcher firing wide and then the same player having another shot flipped over by Morrish, but on 28 the Anvils were finally undone when Luke Hackett found the lurking Chris Boulter in space to level the scores at one a piece. 1-1. Worse was to come for the Anvils when on 31 the Wands went further in front when from a clearance upfield the ball found Bradley who in turn found Pitcher but the strikers shot was half cleared and Bradley again was on hand and netted with ease. 2-1 Wands.

One wondered about the Anvils reaction to this about turn of fortunes, but no as Josh Alcock tested Shaw in the home goal, then on 41 the upwardly mobile Mahadoo then setup Geo Wallis but the midfielder could only screw his shot wide, but come 43 and salvation when a long freekick by Vintner found a flaying Wanderers arm just outside the box and once the usual recriminations had simmered down it was left to Tom Frankland to lift the ball over the wall and past the despairing Shaw to restore parity as halftime approached. HT 2-2.

For the second half homesters Tolfrey went near on 47, followed by Beckles on a long twisting run but ending with a shot well wide, the Anvil centreback pairing of James day and Blair Cooney were dealing well with ace striker Tolfrey whilst fullbacks Mark Barnard and Vintner were always eager to chase up the flanks, on the hour another Pitcher shot was punched clear only as far as Hackett but he to was off target.

Around the hour mark the Anvils were having a good spell of keeping control, at this time a change on the bench bought on Mickey Kseniuk. Come 74 and Wallis taking a pass from Frankland then shot straight at Shaw.

By now the homesters were beginning to exert a bit more authority on the game and on 70 the Anvil wall was breached again with Tolfrey cutting inside to shoot past the exposed Morrish, 3-1 Wands. Further changes on the Anvil bench as the last 20 started to bite into Anvil limbs, but although now becoming a bit over run they manfully stuck to their task before leading goalscorer Tolfrey added a brace in the final overtime minutes to give it game, set and match to the Wanderers by the rather flattering scoreline of 5-2.
