ANVILS LACK FIREPOWER TO TARNISH THE GOLDS

With yet again more enforced changes due to reasons various, allied to just three on the bench which also included the coach, then one was a bit fearful of the outcome when meeting up with the free scoring Golds outfit who had been averaging three goals per match this season.

Early sign of encouragement for the Anvils came as early as 5 mins when an early cross found Ryan Taylor in space but shooting hurriedly fired over the bar, the outstanding Blair Cooney then set off on a charge before being halted, followed by centreback partner Owen Roberts having an early freekick cleared.

The Golds themselves went close on 7 when George Landais a scourge all afternoon then had his cross rattle the bar, more pressure was building and on 13 the Anvil backline was finally breached when Landais seized on a Joe Shelly cross to open the homesters account. 1-0 Golds.

As expected the homesters were eager for more and pushed forward but a combination of the Anvils playing a highline and impetuosity of the Golds frontmen kept the assistant referee busy with his flag and the offside decisions.

The Anvil strikers Grant Rigler and Leyton Regan were having to fight for scraps upfront as the Golds pushed the Anvil midfield further back, and the stretched back four forced to hack long balls out of defence which were mostly gobbled up with ease by the opposing defenders, but credit to the Anvils as they fought tooth and nail to limit the Golds to just a single goal as the half ended. HT 1-0 Golds.

An early chance for the homesters came on 48 with Kieron Pamments corner finding Josh Bates but his header was taken by Anvil keeper Andy Greaves, just after Landais crept in on the blind side to nod over as the Gold supporters started to become restless at their sides lack of progress in the scoring stakes, they had to wait til 64 for relief when a Landais shot hit Roberts for a corner and from the corner Shelly nipped in to tuck the ball home. 2-0 Golds.

Changes on both benches with Anvils hard working Rigler being replaced by Martin Mutungi and Andy Goodwin by Terry Regan as the Anvils pushed hard to try and get something from the game as conditions underfoot became more difficult and legs starting to tire fast in keeping the opposition out, several times the Anvils were opened up but their always seemed to be a tired limb able to hack it away, on 76 Mutungi a latterday Raheem Stirling managed to slip down the left flank and test ex Anvil keeper Matt Morrish, on 77 Cooney who had been a brick in defence was booked for a tired challenge.

The hosts then ran the game down with Josh Clack supplying Shelly who in turn only found Greaves, then came sub George Gaskin scooping over when it looked easier to score, a token gesture for the Anvils came on 80 with Leyton Regan seeing his cross just miss the far post as the game ended. FT 2-0 Golds.
