Saturday 27th September 2014 RUR Cup - 2nd Round Midhurst & Easebourne ( 1 ) 2 Crawley Down Gatwick ( 0 ) 0 ( Sheldrake 39, Towers 81. )

ANVILS STAG'GERED BY STAGS

Overall it was another disappointing outcome for the Anvils against a side that belied their Div 2 status and made up for it in wholehearted endeavour.

A good opening 5 mins for the Anvils looked promising with first Ciaran Steers supplying Steve Major whose header was just wide, followed by Scott Johnston's free kick from the halfway line being taken by Stags keeper Pat Cowell, then came a Steve Haliday centre that found Steers but his attempt at goal was charged down and away.

Now it was the Stags turn, with a Liam Dreckman free kick also being charged down, the same player then got free and forced Anvil keeper Seb Bos to his knees, another scare for the Anvils came with Mat Mason striking the upright.

For the Anvils Haliday then cut inside to fire wide, followed by Josh Alcock being fouled just outside the box, the same player then taking the kick but only into keeper Cowells arms, defender Mo Shuga'a then joined the action with a charge down the left but with his cross going wide of the far post.

By the half hour the Stags were beginning to get on top, with another free kick by Will Stevens being headed wide by Mason, and Dreckman setting up Stevens who in turn could only fire across the face, something had to give and on 39 it did with a Gary Norgate cross being put away by the unmarked head of Luke Sheldrake to open the scoring. Anvils only reply at this stage was another Alcock corner that found Major who in turn found Charlie Dodds but his header was well over. HT 1-0 Stags.

The second half followed a similar pattern of the Anvils struggling to open up a obdurate defence, with only Alcock for the Anvils causing the homesters problems with his pace down the right flank and his crossing ability that was generally wasted by lack of bodies in the box, on 70 changes on the Anvil bench bought on James Upton and the burley Matt Burroughs in place of Haliday and Major, on 75 the nearest yet to an Anvil goal came through the well marked Grant Rigler who found space to have his shot hacked off the line only to find Burrough's whose shot went well over.

The homesters were now looking the more dangerous of the two sides and taking advantage of gaps appearing in the Anvil defence as they went in search of that vital equaliser. Sheldrake set up Josh Sheehan but his shot was taken by Bos, but come 81 and it was game over with Dreckman finding sub Scott Towers in space to notch his sides second and entry into the 3rd round. FT 2-0 Stags.

In the last few added minutes the highly volatile Shuga'a was booked twice and sent off, the second card involving a mass brawl, out of character with a game played in a very good spirit!
