ANVILS SUFFER THE BLUES

Overall this was a much improved performance from the Anvils despite what the final scoreline might suggest, a scoreline that in real terms belied the effort the Anvils put into the whole 90 mins in conditions that could be best described as somewhat heavy underfoot to say the least, plus in having as much of the play as the Blues, yet incredibly still finding themselves three goals down at the interval. Played out on a real pudding of a pitch both sides found it difficult to move the ball around, the Anvils with a couple of new signings which included the experienced Owen Roberts made the first noise after 3 mins when a Sam Cane corner found Roberts in the box who in turn could only blaze over, as the Anvils took up the early running.

The Blues first real attack came with the tall striker Jordan Stubbins heading over from a Jordan Woodley corner, but soon after the frontman sought revenge when seizing on to a loose ball drove home from 25 yds to put the Blues in front. 1-0 Ringmer.

The Anvils still struggling to adapt to the surface then had Jacob Wright breaking down the left flank to setup Lee Thomas but he in turn could only put his shot wide, new boy Leyton Regan then just lost out to Blues keeper Callum Christie in gathering a cross, but had another chance just after which the keeper gathered. Back came the Blues with a free kick that found its way to Woodley but his shot was turned away for a corner by Anvil keeper Sam Jackson, the resultant corner by Seb Saunders then found Woodley in space to rifle home the Blues second. 2-0 Ringmer.

Although two goals down the Anvils continued to take the game to the homesters with Cane pushing forward whenever, and Grant Rigler finding the conditions to his liking in holding the ball up then feeding the speed of Regan and Lee Thomas whenever, whilst at the back Roberts and James Day continued to win the high balls, but for all their hard work they were undone again on 40 when Roberts took a shot that felled him and with the kerfuffle about stopping play, a Blues player then fell to the ground and a most undeserved penalty was given and put away by Woodley to give the Blues a somewhat fortuitous three goal cushion at the interval. HT 3-0 Ringmer.

Hopes were high for the Anvils as they attacked down the notorious slope, although it was an early shot from homesters Saunders that just drifted wide of the upright, and another Stubbins effort that was taken by Jackson, but come the hour mark the Anvils started to get on top, with Ciaran Steers on for the hard working Harry Lowe they started to stretch the home defence with a Steers corner and a Regan free kick causing problems in the Blues defence, on 67 came the breakthro with another Regan free kick that found Steers who picked out the top corner and netted giving the home keeper no chance. 3-1 Ringmer.

On 70 George Wallis entered the fray as the Anvils upped their attack mode, next came Cane with another charge upfield before being stopped in his tracks, plenty of huff and puff but it was that final ball that stopped the Anvils time and again getting back into the game, the fight was there but the clinical finish was missing, with the game drifting to an end the homesters then rubbed further salt into the Anvil wounds with Saunders stumbling through to notch the Blues fourth, but the Anvils quickly responded with Cane running home the Anvils second in added on time. FT 4-2 Ringmer.
