WOODWORK BARS ANVIL PROGRESS

Anvils quickly opened proceedings with skipper Blair Cooney showing the way with a right wing charge and cross that just fizzed past the far post, not far behind then came Ciaran Steers also on the right flank sent in the first freekick that centreback James Day just missed with an attempted header, the same combination on 10 mins had Day this time heading over.

It took the Musselmen a good quarter hour to get seriously involved with a Baris Bozyigit corner being cleared upfield, plus midfielder Rob Allen’s freekick being taken by Anvil Keeper Rob Woodward, to finish this early skirmish Mike Damarios deep cross found Kari Bishard in space but the striker could only find keeper Woodward.

Anvils continued to press with a Jeff Mahadoo freekick finding keeper Fraser Trigwell, on 24 a long shot by Sonny Barton caused keeper Trigwell to scramble the ball away, this was then followed by Alex Reid’s long freekick that found Steers who in turn fired wide of the upright, on the half hour Sam Cane then joined the party with his shot also gathered by the keeper.

On 35 it was the visitors turn to take up the running with Bishards charge earning a corner which taken by Bozyigit had Day heading clear of danger, both sides continued to probe for that opening without success as the half ended all square. HT 0-0.

For the second half the Anvils attacked the Kop End with the irrepressible Steers leading the way, combining first with Grant Rigler to gain a corner that yet again floated pass the face of goal with no Anvillian in sight, on 50 a combination of Steers and Day resulted in the latter heading over yet again, on the hour a James Lovett corner then found Cane who in turn missed the target, just after the hour Martin Mutungi and Lee Thomas entered the fray as the Anvils upped the ante in their search for a result.

On 55 Musselman Bozyigit tested Woodward, the keeper not averse to charging out of goal when warranted, tho slight controversy was raised just after when a hurried goalkick struck the back of Bishard who was slow to run back, the resultant outcome was the ball running slowly over the goal line, however protests came to nowt as the referee ordered the goalkick to be retaken, tho the visitors continued to push forward but their eagerness caught them offside most times.

For the Anvils Steers was to be the main outlet down the right flank and time and again he stretched the visitors left flank with his centres creating plenty of activity in the Musselmens box, but the outcome usually favoured the visitors, with 90 now beckoning came the nearest to an Anvil goal when star man Steers broke down the right yet again to evade the last man and put in a screamer of a cross that struck and then rolled along the bar to safety, much to the visitors relief. FT 0-0.
