STRINGERS NO MATCH FOR THE ANVILS

This wasn't quite as one sided as the score line might suggest, as the Stringers more then held their own in the first half, however tired limbs in the 2nd period were no match for the Anvils rampant forward line.

Anvils made three changes from Tuesday nights game, with Tom Gannon starting upfront in place of Sam Cane, and Williams Peauroux and Sonny Barton replacing the absent Marc Pelling and Michael Belli.

Early start for the Anvils came on 3 with Gannon heading over a Dan Sullivan corner, just after a Josh Martin cross found Lee Thomas who headed wide, come 10 and the Anvil opener, coming after Oli Leslie had been felled outside the box, with Sullivan’s free kick being nodded home by Mike Spence past Stringers keeper Tom Bradford. 1-0 Anvils, more was to come on 18 when from an Anvil clearance Leslie was able to evade centre back Jack Findon and slide the ball past Bradford to give the Anvils a two goal lead. 2-0 Anvils.

The Stringers then started to make movements of their own, with Charlie Shearing taking advantage of a Blair Cooney slip but shooting well wide, on 20 it was a Dave Chan attempt straight at Anvil keeper Martin Hopkins, they continued to push forward, with shots from Simon Piper, and a header from Shearing, but overall not really seriously testing the Anvil backline.

For the Anvils, Gannon on 30 had another shot blocked, but perhaps the most noticeable part of the first half came just before halftime with fullback Sonny Barton from around 35yards, releasing a rocket of a shot that flew past the far upright. Overall though the Stringers were lucky to go in at HT only 2-0 down with some incredible missed chances keeping the score to only 2-0 Anvils.

With the second half and the Anvils kicking toward the Kop, one was looking forward to a possible improvement on the score sheet, and we didn't have to wait long, on 55 a combination of Spence, and Leslie caused a scuffle in the box that led to Thomas heading home 3-0 Anvils.

On 65 Sam Cane came on for Gannon and on 70 it was Andy Goodwin coming on for Sullivan, within minutes Cane was on hand to notch a quick fire double and put the Anvils 5-0 to the good.

The Stringers now noticeably tiring with this relentless Anvil pressure still were making the odd sortie, with a Ross Markham shot taken by Hopkins, and Connor Townsend shooting wide.

With the Anvils now pouring forward, it was just a case of how many, with continuous balls pumped forward. Williams Peauroux’s corner found the head of James Day just over and a Cooney charge down the flank being rewarded on 87 by another Spence finish to give the midfielder a well deserved double 6-0 Anvils. To round off proceedings leading marksman Leslie applied that well known 'coup de grace’ with the 7th of the match, and three more points that sees the Anvils reach 52 pts for the season, plus now an impressive 10 goal plus in the goals column. FT 7-0 Anvils.
