ANVILS PRUNE THE OAKS

Having suffered a 4-2 defeat at Oaks earlier in the season the Anvils were out for a bit of retribution, but Oaks were the first to settle, and as early as 5 mins the Anvils went behind to a Scott Taylor goal after his shot was parried by keeper Hopkins but only back into his path for the 1st goal. 0-1 Oaks

Anvils were soon into their stride with a combination of Sam Cane and Oli Leslie bringing keeper Alex Harris into the game, on 24 a Sonny Barton cross found Lee Thomas, but the flankman’s header only found the keeper, but Thomas was not to be denied, and on 27 a sweeping attack from Spence and Leslie was only half cleared as far as Thomas who from outside the box blasted home. 1-1.

The Oaks backed by the strong wind kept pressing with centre back Ellis Cormace heading over, and a Sam Cooper shot being scooped off the line by Spence, followed by Taylor’s shot safely gathered by Hopkins.

On 36 it was Thomas again for The Anvils after a Michael Belli freekick into the box found Thomas rose the rise the highest to nod the ball home, further chances for both sides, but no further addition to the scoreline. HT 2-1 Anvils.

With the Anvils now attacking the Kop End and the wind in their favour the scent of further Anvil additions was never far away, but the Oaks took up the cudgel early with Hassan Ibrahim having a charge but firing wide, on 65 a corner found Tom Bold who could only blaze well wide, a bit of controversy on 70 with Hopkins racing out to clear the ball, but at the same time bringing down an Oaks player, much heated discussion before the Oaks were awarded a freekick, and Hopkins a yellow card.

With 70 registering on the clock, Anvil fitness levels began to tell, and from another flowing attack left Dan Sullivan on 71 to claim number three with an excellent pin point shot into the left corner and virtually straight after Belli joined the party to make the score 4-1 Anvils.

With 20 to go it was all change on the Anvil bench with Williams Peauroux and Tom Gannon entering the affray. Further goals were never far away with Gannon notching the Anvils 5th on 77, more Anvil movement on the bench as Josh Martin provided the fresh legs. 5-1 Anvils

With time now running out it was left to Gannon on 88 to supply the coup de grace in setting up a cross that Sullivan gleefully headed home, to make it 6-1 Anvils and registering their 70th goal of their league campaign hoisting them up to 10th in the league. FT 6-1 Anvils.
