THE BEST OF THE REST

Anvils today finally pricked the bubble of invincibility that has followed the Heathens thro out the season.

Todays encounter was nail biting close, with the proud champions fighting hard to preserve that long unbeaten run, but the Anvils before their biggest gate of the season refused to yield, and in the words of Winston Churchill 'this was their finest hour'.

This was deemed thee MOTD when the best of the rest would lock proverbial horns in an encounter that featured an unbeaten home record up against an unbeaten away record, which brings to mind a song that featured the lines 'somethings gotta give, somethings gotta give' and indeed something did.

Before an above average gate of equal religions, and equal portions of sun, wind and rain the game opened with both sides feeling their way, but on 16 mins the Anvils struck the first blow with the fleet footed Ben Brooker outpacing defenders in his wake to chalk up the opener. 1-0 Anvils

The Heath with corners and free kicks then came back to storm the Anvil ramparts and on 27 leading Heath scorer Rob O'Toole was the fox in the box to restore parity at a goal a piece, further chances came and went but with no further additions and HT: 1-1

The Second Half continued with the Heath continuing to pile on the pressure, but superb defensive work by the Anvils managed to hold the Heathens at bay, changes on both benches as both sides went for the jugular, with the Anvil raids being nullified by the more direct play of the opposition, but the Heathens were to be rocked on 80 when neat approach play led to leading Anvil scorer Sam Cane finding space to put the Anvils in front for the second time. 2-1 Anvils.

Further changes on the Heath bench as they fought to preserve their unbeaten run, all this against a background of rising temperatures both on and off the field of play, the last ten minutes must have been the longest in Anvil history as the gallant homesters refused to buckle under the intense Heath pressure, but every Anvil player was by now a hero as they defied pain to throw bodies at the now rampaging Heathens, but the gods above were wearing Anvil smiles today as the homesters produced their best of the season on the very last day of the campaign. FT 2-1 Anvils.

Praise to both sides for a fantastic match with the Heathens no doubt still hurting, to be praised for staying behind and applauding the Anvils as they were given their runners up medals, feel quite emotional
