ANVILS OUTMUSCLE THE MUSSELMEN

After being put under severe pressure for the first 30 mins in which a goal was conceded, the Anvils roared back to take the last quarter, and then literally ran the second half gathering a well deserved equaliser and then were desperately unlucky not to have taken the game outright, thus saving having to go to a replay.

The Musselmen dominated the early exchanges with an early free kick being hacked wide by Carl Dunk, just after a corner by Dunk was half cleared only as far as skipper and ex Anvil Wes Millis but he in turn fired over, yet more corners followed before the giant Jamal Fenelon got in on the act with a shot touched over by Anvil stopper Seb Bos. Anvils took a while to settle with the early exchanges not to promising, but Mo Shuga'a after a neat Anvil buildup shot over when well placed, soon after Steve Major set up the industrious Matt Burroughs for a chance that homesters keeper Josh Heyburn had to get down quickly to push away, on 15 Aaron Denver took a knock but was able to return to the action. On 17 from yet another Musselmen corner taken by Dunk the ball was half cleared only as far as Millis who headed powerfully home to give the homesters an early start.
1-0 Musselmen.

Anvil supporters groaned inwardly expecting another debacle, with Millis again in the action with a header well wide, then Fenelon taking advantage of an Anvil slip could only screw wide, come 25 and Sam Cane had to retire from the action being replaced by Josh Alcock, this change seemed to galvanise the Anvils whom all of a sudden started to dictate play, with Major and Alcock cutting thro the homesters defence for the latter to fire wide, for the remainder of the half Anvils were getting on top whilst the homesters became more defensive at this sudden turn of events, and no doubt were pleased when the 45min was reached. HT 1-0 Musselmen.

For the second half it was to be a rerun of the last quarter hour as the Anvils took over the running with Matt Gates a giant in defence and now attack fired wide after a neat buildup, on 50 a Shuga'a free kick struck a post and came back out, a corner by Alcock was headed over by Gates, another corner by Shuga'a was hacked away as the homesters struggled to get going, on the hour another Alcock corner was headed over by Blair Cooney.

The homesters were reeling at this stage, but come 50 they had a rare sight of goal with Ross Myers catching the Anvils off guard with his snap shot crashing against the bar, and then sub Alex Fair firing over, and that was to be it from the homesters with just the exception of the odd corner.

On 64 the Anvils got their just reward, an equalizer, from an Alcock corner the ball fell to Matt Gates lurking just outside the box who lobbed the keeper with a well taken volley to square the match 1-1.

On 77 with the Anvils in the ascendancy another Gates cross came back off the upright, he then followed that by setting up Ciaran Steers whose shot caused keeper Heyburn to flick over, on 82 another Shuga'a corner pinged around the box before being hacked away, that was to be it for the final minutes as the Anvils huffed and puffed but just couldn't blow the Musselmens house down. FT 1-1.
