ANVILS OUTMUSSLED

The Musselmen started like the proverbial 'bat out of hell' with chances galore within the first 15 mins, starting with Karl Bichard nipping in early only to blast wide, next came Alex Young stretching Anvil keeper Sam Jackson, freekicks and corners then followed with Bichard again causing confusion in the Anvil box before being hacked clear. First reply for the Anvils came with fullback Mark Barnard’s freekick finding Steve Major in space but he was then quickly closed down, come 10 and against the run of play the Anvils went in front when Tom Frankland on a run down the right flank crossed for Grant Rigler whom amidst flying arms and boots bravely nodded the ball home to put the Anvils in front. 0-1 Anvils.

The shocked homesters then got back into the game with Mike Demario firing wide, come 15 and a Craig Stevens corner found Rob Allen but scooped his shot over the bar, then came Bichard again as the overworked Anvil defence somehow managed to keep the homesters at bay, that was until the 23 min when Young broke clear with his shot being parried away by Jackson but only as far as Dejaun Best who drove home for the Musslemen. 1-1.

Then a combination of Stevens and Best set Ross Myers free to put the home side in front for the first time. 2-1 Shoreham.

After this blow the Anvils fought back with Frankland sending in a cross that just drifted over the far upright, followed by Major’s freekick that went straight thro to keeper Nick Taylor, flankman Frankland plus Barnard were keeping the homesters left flank on the alert with their pace during the remainder of the half, with Major adding the finale with a header from a Rigler cross straight at keeper Taylor. HT 2-1 Shoreham.

Geoff Mahadoo was introduced 2nd Half and was soon into action heading just wide from Barnard’s cross, and then having his run on goal halted for a corner, just after centreback James Day having an excursion upfield but he to could only fire the ball over. After those early attacks the Musselmen came back into action with first a freekick that struck the upright and on 56 it was Mark Goldson placing his shot into Jacksons arms, pressure finally told on the hour when another freekick pinged around the Anvil box with the final shot being handled away by Barnard resulting in a penalty and an early bath for the culprit. Alex Laing hit home the Pen. 3-1 Shoreham.
At This stage the Anvils were playing far too deep and on 64 with homesters Young’s shot only half cleared, Myers drove home to put the homesters up 4-1 Shoreham.

It was becoming a real battle for the 10 men Anvils as the homesters poured forward in numbers, most noticeable on the Anvil right flank since the departure of Barnard left a huge gap, changes on the Anvil bench came on 75 with Ciaran Steers coming on. Fullback Jacob Wright then got loose on the left to set up Sam Cane but he to could only fire wide. Andy Goodwin entered the fray on 82, flankman Frankland who seemed to be the only player likely to upset the homeside with his pace and determination then put in a vicious cross that flew across the face of goal, but no one was on hand to apply the finishing touch. The homesters then finished off this rather one sided half with a final goal on 90 when a Young corner was headed home by Laing to finally settle the outcome. FT 5-1 Shoreham.
