After a defeat at Lancing last Saturday, hopes were high that the RUR Cup would raise performances against high flyers Pagham, whom the Anvils two months previous had put five past in the PB cup.

Pagham came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders and after just 6 minutes the Lions went ahead, after a long thro ball opened up the Anvil defence enabling striker Daniel Simmonds to race through and beat advancing keeper Seb Bos for the opener. 0-1 Lions.

The Anvils started to come more into the game, with Dan Sullivan’s free kick being punched clear by keeper James Binfield, on 20 it was a Williams Peauroux free kick that was headed away for a corner, with the resulting kick being hacked clear, on 23 Oli Leslie should have done better when slipping and letting the ball run loose, by the half hour, though behind, the Anvils were having most of the play in midfield, but lacked the cutting edge up front to pierce the Lions defence.

The Lions always looked dangerous, breaking well and using the long ball over the top which seemed always to be collected by their quick forwards on the counter. Come 35mins and striker Simmonds got the better of the Anvils 'high line' to add number two, 0-2 Lions.

Simmonds went near minutes later when taking an Andrew Chick free kick but keeper Bos stifled the shot. next came Callum Overton firing straight at Bos, with the clock minutes from halftime, the Anvils suffered a double whammy with Simmonds getting his hat trick, followed by Lloyd Rowatt to give the Lions a four goal interval lead.

HT: 0-4 Pagham.

Second half the Anvils put on a better show in containing the rampant Lions and several chances also went begging for the Anvils up front. Dan Sullivan set up Michael Belli whose shot failed to beat Binfield, on 65 the injured Blair Cooney was replaced by Josh Martin, and come 70 Nick Sullivan joined the fray on for Belli. The Anvils having most of the play at this point just could not find the net. With the Referee just about to end the match an Anvil chance right at the end was cleared by the Lions and the resulting long ball was picked up by Overton who sprinted through to hit number five.

FT 0-5 Pagham.

Team: Seb Bos, Blair Cooney (Josh Martin), Sonny Barton, Williams Peauroux, Marc Pelling , James Day, Dan Sullivan, Michael Belli, Mike Spence (Johden de Meyer), Oli Leslie, Lee Thomas.
