Crawley Down Gatwick 2 Eastbourne Town 2
By Richard Munn
After a lay off due to the recent inclement weather the Anvils finally managed to play a home game as they welcomed Eastbourne Town to the Haven.
In truth the fixture had an end of season flavour to it. The home side started the day comfortably in mid table and possibly with one eye on the upcoming Peter Bentley cup semi-final against Horsham YMCA, while the visitors although not mathematically out of the title and promotion race, probably have too much to do at this late stage in the season. The first half was quite a drab affair with lots of endeavour but not a lot to set the pulse racing for the football purist despite the vocal encouragement from the visiting Beachy Head ultras behind the goal. It seemed almost inevitable that the halftime break would be reached on a nil all score line and so it turned out. Thankfully both sides raised their game in the second period. After 50 minutes a penalty was awarded to the visitors which was expertly dispatched by Chris Cumming-Bart. There was no doubt as to the foul but there was almost universal agreement that it took place outside the box. The Anvils were spurred on by a sense of injustice and did not have to wait long for their own fortuitous penalty award after 65 minutes. This time the challenge was clearly in the area but as Sonny Barton went down in agony with a pulled hamstring the referee awarded what seemed an almost sympathetic penalty. The always reliable William Peauroux hammered home the spot kick. Suitably energised the home took the lead on 70 minutes when Dan Sullivan got on the end of a cross from the left to finish with aplomb. The Anvils looked favourites to hold on for the three points but after 83 minutes the home defence, which had been solid all game, seemed to evaporate in the face of a quick break and substitute Aaron Capon slotted home. It finished honours even which seemed about right.
